One Word Film

The goal of this one-word film project was to create a short film that conveys a specific word through visual storytelling, camera shots, angles, and editing techniques. The word I got was hateful. So I got together with my partner to brainstorm ideas. We came up with the idea to make a film about two girls where one girl is constantly hating on the other girl like making faces at her and rolling her eyes.

Summary of Directions

The assignment required each group to develop a short film (60-90 seconds) based on a word assigned in class. The story needed to represent the word visually, with no dialogue, using only images, sounds, symbols, and editing. Key guidelines were:

  • No dialogue allowed, only instrumental audio or sound effects.
  • The film must be between 1 minute and 1 ½ minutes.
  • Use camera shots/angles and editing to help tell the story.

Once I was assigned the word hatred, My goal was to express the feeling of hatred by using visual elements that conveyed tension, conflict, and negative energy. I wanted to keep the story simple but impactful, focusing on symbols of hatred, such as angry facial expressions and destructive actions.

I drew out each scene, choosing specific angles like close-ups on faces to show expressions and wide shots to capture the setting. The storyboard helped me think about pacing and how different shots could build up the tension leading to a final, impactful moment. It also helped me plan how I wanted to move the camera to make the shots more dynamic.

The editing resource I used was Capcut.

Some things I would focus on next time would be the lighting. I would also try to add more variety in the types of camera shots and movements to make the film feel more dynamic.

Camer Shots/Angles quiz

For my Camera shots quiz, I had to use a variety of precise camera angles and images to create a visual story. I had to choose an inanimate object, create a narrative around it, and take fifteen different pictures from different angles, such as close-ups, medium shots, long views, and establishing photos 

I decided to make Winnie, the chew toy owned by my dog named Snow, the main character. Storyline-wise, it centers on Winnie's exciting day. I arranged every picture to show the toy's experiences and sentiments as they evolved over the day, from exhilaration and discovery to being jealous and, ultimately, realizing that it was Snow's favorite toy. 

Getting the dog to stay in one position wasn't easy, but I am with how the pictures came out, especially the close-ups and extreme close-ups that perfectly conveyed Winnie's feelings. The story became more lively and captivating with the POV view and the mix of high and low angles. 

However, if I were to do this project again, I would focus more on lighting. Some shots could have benefited from better natural lighting or additional light sources to enhance clarity and mood. 

Overall, the project was a great learning experience, and I’m excited to apply these techniques to future visual storytelling projects.
